Noticeboard          Event format           Dates

10 Txs and associated triffids provide the amusement.

Context:
The format of these events has evolved many times since the first Multi-Tx event in 2008 , you can see the progression here. Changes were frequent until the addition of the Ghost in 2017, introduced to keep the 'hotshots' busy for the duration of the event, giving them the chance to 'enjoy' the Multi-Spice challenge.  Since then skills have gradually improved and too many people are once again finding all ten Txs with time to spare, thus missing out on an important part of the event.

Experimental changes for this event:
1)  Make Red Tx transmissions (C, H, M & Ghost) shorter, some just 10 secs of morse (IDs only, no carrier).
2)  As a gesture for those whose taste buds have been numbed by too much Spice, the dreaded, abrupt machine gun would be replaced by the 'Carrier of Doom' at 4pm, a whole minute of extra panic time to dib, banking points!

Gary enjoys a bit of pressure  and, as on his previous events, his site was chosen by looking on the web. He wouldn't have time to visit the site until early on the day of the event. He hoped to use Westlands Country Park but to give himself options a larger area was defined by the event maps provided to participants.

Tx locations - Ghost shown as I.

Well done Rosie, the only person to find 9 Txs, how did you do it?

My plan was, with the red TXs being much harder than usual, to concentrate on green and yellow TXs. I took the usual approximate bearings at start until I heard M, very strong - change of plan. Saw Tim and George head off in the direction of my joker F. Know that I can’t outrun Tim so decided to go for M first.

Luckily it was spotted in the second place I looked. Then out into big field, very long way to go across to corner. TX further on, but unfortunately by staying in the field, I had to backtrack to get on to the dyke, by which time Tim was just leaving G, which was quickly spotted.

George was seen going off in distance heading towards my joker, F. I Overshot slightly before finding path doubling back to bag 3 rd . I then set off via H for the second group. I was planning to get H towards end – thought that I’d just make a note of rough area but when I got there Gary was standing  with camera in hand and Tim and George were already searching so decided to join in. Must have ducked under it at least twice before spotting it.

Then I continued due north to K and L, which I hadn’t taken any bearings on. Both were fairly straightforward finds with no other competitors in the vicinity and I was amazed to be number 2 on dibbing both of them.

Then I needed to find my way through the houses towards A. As I approached the western edge of the country park I saw Tim running along the top of the ridge where I wanted to be but there was a steep overgrown bank and no access. So went in via main entrance and doubled back towards A. George appeared as I waited for a bearing on B but I didn’t take the best route so he beat me. C had seemed reasonably strong at B so I thought I would take a look. When it transmitted briefly, I was right on top of it. It went off but I
thought where I would put it and found it straightaway. So back for the long trek to validate. I had a small panic when I climbed the bank and turned the wrong way initially.

Basically I had a lot of luck with the order in which the stations were tackled, that and having a low handicap. For once everything seemed to go right and I was rather stunned to win.

I had seen Grymes dyke on a map and thought that might be used for one set. It was an interesting and varied site. The dykes were part of the defences of Camulodunum, or the ancient iron age settlement, which then became modern day Colchester.

Many thanks to Gary for setting this one.

Changes in Hero League for those present.      All those with a handicap are listed here.

Summary

The combination of the shorter transmission times and an 'interesting' site which had us thinking we had a reverse sense when the Rx said 'head for the houses',  and then finding, after a 180, that the correct direction was blocked by a wire fence!

A real challenge producing the desired result - nobody found all 10 !  Well done Gary, who claimed his 5 points for running the event, retaking the Hero - thoroughly deserved for producing so much entertainment.

Pleased to see that Colin F is still going for it, but some smart banking only served up a mildly spiced result.  He will be planting the Triffids somewhere in Kent on 12/07/26, watch the Noticeboard for details.
